James 4:1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lists that war in your members? I Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil. Every so many years we hear talk of reparations to be paid to African Americans for having been made slaves. I would like to point out that reparations have already been paid many times over. First it was paid in blood. Over 620,000 men, mostly white, died in the War between the States. While the roots of the war, like all wars, was really financial, the draw to bring northern soldiers to the banner was to free slaves. By the way the United States is the only country were slavery was ended by war. Add to this many civilians who were caught in the cross fire and starvation and the number goes higher. And remember those that went home maimed. Next it was paid in cash. Once the slaves were set free the 14th amendment section 5 forbade reparations to be paid to the slave owners. The war cost the Union 5.2 BILLION dollars. And the economy of the South was completely bankrupt. Freedmen associations were set up. Later on came untold millions from President Johnson’s Great Society program. There are many wealthy black Americans now and a rapidly growing middle class. I live in a collage town and see more and more both black and Hispanic students.
Next, who should pay these reparations? The European traders mostly bought slaves from other African tribes. Should the descendants of the conquering tribes pay? Native Americans owned some slaves. Should they pay. 3775 African Americans owned slaves. Should their descendants pay? No money is owed to any one. It has been paid in blood sweat and tears and cold hard cash. And a bright future awaits those who will take advantage of the opportunity and overcome the obstacles and work to unite rather than divide this great nation in which we live.
